The MATATAG Curriculum: Assessing Its Impact on 21st-Century Science and Social Studies Education in the Philippines

Abstract

The MATATAG Curriculum, a flagship educational initiative in the Philippines, aims to strengthen foundational learning competencies while fostering 21st-century skills among learners. This study evaluates the curriculum's effectiveness in enhancing Science and Social Studies education in the senior high school level by analyzing its integration of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and global citizenship. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative data from standardized assessments and qualitative insights from teacher interviews and classroom observations. Key findings indicate that the curriculum's emphasis on contextualized, interdisciplinary instruction has improved students' conceptual understanding and real-world application of scientific and societal principles. However, challenges remain, particularly in teacher preparedness, resource availability, and alignment with localized educational needs. The study also highlights how the curriculum supports inclusivity and adaptability in addressing diverse learning profiles. Recommendations include continuous professional development for educators, enhanced infrastructure for digital learning tools, and iterative curriculum review processes to ensure its responsiveness to evolving global standards. This research underscores the pivotal role of the MATATAG Curriculum in shaping globally competent Filipino learners while addressing the nuances of national identity and cultural heritage. The findings contribute to ongoing discourse on educational reform, offering actionable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders striving to optimize the quality of science and social studies instruction in the Philippines.
