Abstract

This study examines the significant role of verbs in shaping meaning within Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles, emphasizing their semantic and pragmatic functions. Verbs are explored not merely as grammatical elements, but as vital instruments in expressing emotional depth, temporal structure, cultural interaction, and thematic development, particularly regarding colonization, nostalgia, and human resilience. A qualitative linguistic analysis was employed, integrating both semantic and pragmatic approaches. Verbs were systematically identified through close reading of The Martian Chronicles, categorized by tense, aspect, modality, and lexical semantics (semantic analysis), as well as analyzed in terms of their discourse functions, including speech acts, presuppositions, implicatures, and character interactions (pragmatic analysis). Special focus was placed on the contrast between dynamic and stative verb usage. The findings reveal that Bradbury’s strategic use of dynamic verbs (e.g., build, destroy) emphasizes the themes of colonization and conflict, while stative verbs (e.g., remember, dream) evoke nostalgia and philosophical reflection. Modal verbs articulate uncertainty and obligation, reflecting human ethical struggles during Mars colonization. Pragmatically, verbs shape speech acts and discourse coherence, highlighting contrasts between Earth settlers and Martian natives. The analysis demonstrates how Bradbury’s verb choices enhance the novel’s emotional, thematic, and structural depth.
