Abstract

Diminutiveness is a linguistic phenomenon that goes beyond indicating smallness, encompassing emotional nuances such as affection, intimacy, or triviality. This phenomenon is morphologically and pragmatically significant across many languages, yet the cross-linguistic and cultural variability in its formation and use remains underexplored. Despite a growing interest in morphology and pragmatics, few studies have provided a comparative linguistic analysis of diminutive expressions in English, Spanish, and Russian while accounting for sociocultural contexts. This study aims to investigate the morphological patterns, semantic implications, and pragmatic functions of diminutives in these three languages. It also seeks to understand how culture shapes the expression of affection and familiarity through diminutives. The analysis reveals that while English, Spanish, and Russian share core communicative purposes—such as expressing affection or softening speech—their diminutive systems differ significantly in complexity and usage. Spanish and Russian exhibit more systematic and culturally embedded uses of diminutive suffixes, while English forms are more context-dependent and less productive. By synthesizing morphological and pragmatic perspectives with cultural analysis, the study offers a multidimensional understanding of how diminutiveness operates within and across languages. The findings enhance our understanding of the social function of morphology, highlighting how seemingly minor linguistic forms can reflect broader cultural values and interpersonal dynamics, thereby contributing to both theoretical and applied linguistic studies.
