Abstract

Within the framework of contemporary higher education, learning a foreign language holds a specific place as a communication tool.  The paper addresses the issue of technical specialty students' development of communicative foreign competence. Based on a well-structured system of instructional speech activities, the author concludes that teaching foreign languages is a unique type of speech activity.  This approach is explained in the article as a way to teach reading English texts, which calls for the use of specific speech materials and an exercise program to carry out this kind of work. The author's exercise approach was designed to help pupils develop their communicative competence.
