CONCRETE POETRY AS A METHOD FOR ENHANCING EARLY LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY IN FILIPINO STUDENTS

Abstract

This study explores the use of concrete poetry as an innovative method for enhancing early language proficiency in Filipino students. Concrete poetry, which combines visual art and written language, is an engaging tool that allows students to interact with language in a dynamic and creative way. Through an experimental design involving primary school students, the research examines how concrete poetry can improve vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and overall language skills. The study finds that when students create or analyze concrete poetry, they are able to better understand the symbolic relationship between language and meaning, enhancing both their linguistic and cognitive development. Additionally, concrete poetry provides an opportunity for students to express emotions and ideas, fostering a deeper connection to language learning. The research also highlights challenges such as limited exposure to the method and teacher preparedness. The study concludes by recommending the integration of concrete poetry into early language curricula to promote active, hands-on learning experiences that support language proficiency in Filipino students.
