Abstract

This study explores the pedagogical potential of integrating poetry in English Language Teaching (ELT). A systematic review methodology was employed to examine existing literature on the topic, focusing on the impact of poetry integration on language acquisition, cultural appreciation, emotional engagement, cognitive benefits, and the overall language learning experience. The review identified effective strategies for poetry integration, including selecting age-appropriate and culturally relevant poems, utilizing interactive activities, and adopting a flexible approach to meet individual learner preferences and needs. Findings reveal that poetry integration positively influences language acquisition, as learners demonstrated improved vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and language proficiency. The rhythmic patterns and emotional appeal of poems enhanced learners' phonological awareness, pronunciation, and language fluency. Moreover, poetry exposed learners to diverse cultural perspectives, fostering cultural appreciation and intercultural communicative competence. The emotional engagement with poetry contributed to a positive affective environment, reducing anxiety and enhancing motivation in language learning. Cognitive benefits were evident through enhanced critical thinking skills and a more holistic understanding of language structures and usage. Effective strategies for poetry integration created a dynamic and inclusive learning environment, empowering learners to connect deeply with the language and their own linguistic identities. This study highlights the transformative power of poetry in ELT, offering insights and implications for language educators seeking innovative approaches to enhance language instruction and promote intercultural understanding and empathy among learners.
