The article examines the causes and factors underlying the formation of external labour migration in Uzbekistan on a historical basis. Drawing upon archival documents and scholarly literature, the study analyses the economic transformation, demographic pressure, employment market imbalances, disruption of production linkages, ethnic migrations, and the pull factors of the Russian labour market that operated during the initial post-independence years. The principal argument advanced is that the period 1991 to 2000 did not yet constitute a stage of fully institutionalised mass external labour migration, but rather a historical transitional period during which the socio-economic, demographic, and territorial foundations of subsequent migration flows were formed. The interpretation of this period as a phase of adjustment and formation of external labour migration in the post-Soviet space is scientifically substantiated through the analysis of primary archival materials and comparative regional sources.References
