Abstract

This systematic review delves into the integration of environmental education into senior high school curricula, offering an in-depth analysis of its rationales, methods, impacts, challenges, and global perspectives. Adolescence, as a crucial period for values and behaviors formation, provides a compelling rationale for instilling environmental responsibility and stewardship in the next generation. Moreover, the urgency of global environmental challenges necessitates informed and engaged citizens. A diverse array of methods and approaches, including dedicated courses, cross-curricular infusion, and the utilization of technology and multimedia tools, empowers educators to engage and inspire students. These approaches not only impart knowledge but also foster the skills and values essential for tackling complex environmental issues. The systematic review unequivocally demonstrates the profound impact of environmental education on students. It enhances environmental awareness, knowledge, and pro-environmental attitudes, leading to tangible behavioral changes. Moreover, students often become advocates for environmental change within their communities, amplifying the societal impact of this education. However, challenges such as teacher training, stakeholder resistance, and variable program quality persist. Addressing these challenges necessitates collaborative efforts among educators, policymakers, and researchers. The study concludes by highlighting the global commitment to environmental education, showcasing initiatives from Australia, Europe, Japan, and beyond. In a world grappling with unprecedented environmental crises, the integration of environmental education into senior high school curricula emerges as a beacon of hope, a testament to education's power to shape values, inspire action, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
