DEVELOPING SCIENTIFIC LITERACY THROUGH BILDUNG-ORIENTED SCIENCE EDUCATION

Abstract

This study explores the role of Bildung-oriented science education in developing scientific literacy among students. Bildung, a concept rooted in German philosophy, emphasizes holistic education focused on personal growth, critical thinking, and the cultivation of moral and intellectual capacities. The research examines how a Bildung-oriented approach can enhance students' understanding of scientific principles, foster inquiry-based learning, and encourage the application of scientific knowledge in real-world contexts. By integrating philosophical foundations with contemporary pedagogical practices, the study investigates how this approach can cultivate scientific literacy not only in terms of content knowledge but also in fostering the ability to think critically about science and its societal implications. The study uses qualitative methods, including classroom observations and interviews with educators, to assess the effectiveness of this approach in various educational settings. Findings suggest that a Bildung-oriented approach promotes deeper engagement with science, encourages a reflective mindset, and helps students develop the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern world. The study concludes with recommendations for incorporating Bildung principles into science curricula to create well-rounded, scientifically literate individuals who are capable of making informed decisions in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-based society.
