MULTISENSORY APPROACHES TO BRIDGING THE LITERACY GAP IN INTERVENTION PRACTICES

Abstract
This study explores the effectiveness of multisensory approaches in bridging the literacy gap in intervention practices for struggling readers. Multisensory techniques, which engage multiple senses (sight, sound, touch, and movement), are recognized for their ability to enhance learning, particularly for students with reading difficulties such as dyslexia. The research examines how integrating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities into literacy instruction can improve phonemic awareness, reading fluency, and comprehension. Through an analysis of intervention programs that incorporate multisensory methods, the study highlights the positive impact on student engagement, retention, and academic performance. It also identifies key strategies for implementing these approaches, including the use of tactile learning materials, interactive technologies, and guided reading practices. Challenges related to teacher training, resource availability, and individual student needs are discussed, along with recommendations for overcoming these barriers. The findings suggest that multisensory approaches offer a promising avenue for closing the literacy gap, particularly in diverse and inclusive classrooms, by addressing various learning styles and cognitive needs.
