THE INTERSECTION OF GENRE-SPECIFIC READING STRATEGIES AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS AMONG DIVERSE LEARNERS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study explores the intersection of genre-specific reading strategies and comprehension skills among diverse learners, highlighting the impact of targeted instructional approaches on reading outcomes. Genre-specific reading strategies, which focus on the distinctive features and conventions of different text types, are essential for enhancing comprehension across varied content areas. The research examines how these strategies, when tailored to diverse learner needs—including linguistic, cultural, and cognitive differences—can improve reading comprehension skills. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study investigates the application of genre-based reading instruction across different learner groups, including English Language Learners (ELLs), students with learning disabilities, and students from varied socio-economic backgrounds. Data were collected through classroom observations, reading assessments, and interviews with educators and students. The findings suggest that genre-specific strategies—such as recognizing narrative structure in fiction, identifying argumentative patterns in persuasive texts, or decoding technical language in expository texts—significantly enhance comprehension, especially for learners with varied linguistic and academic backgrounds. The study emphasizes the importance of adaptive reading strategies that cater to the individual needs of students, thus fostering a more inclusive and effective reading environment. Recommendations for educators include incorporating genre awareness into reading curricula, offering differentiated instruction, and providing scaffolding to support diverse learners in developing strong reading comprehension skills.
